Re: What are your opinions about the SE program?
Hi Slide:

To quickly answer your questions, the music scene in Burlington is completely amazing. I don't listen to much electronic music, but I'm sure that you wouldn't have a hard time discovering a plethora of music that you're interested in.

I enjoy Software Engineering quite a bit. As this is a relatively new major, Champlain is still working at hammering out the kinks, but things are beginning to truly get rolling in recent years. We have intermediate and advanced courses in java, c++ and .NET, and we cover many of the managerial aspects of software engineering.

I live off campus, so the only money I pay Champlain College is the 14K tuition each year. Between scholarships and grants, I only wind up paying CC 7-8,000 each year. I feel that the education that I am getting is quite worth less than 10 grand per year.

I haven't eaten on campus in 3 years (since Freshman year) but when I did, I couldn't stand the food. However, we have just gotten a brand new cafeteria, and I've heard that the food has improved.

I'm not positive about double majors, but I know people that are minoring. I'm sure with a little research you could find out pretty quickly.

The dorms on campus are completely amazing. They're old restored colonial mansions, and they're pretty much the coolest dorms on the face of the planet. I reccommend South House, if you decide to stay on campus. The apartments in Burlington range from 350-400 for an "affordable" place, and 400+ for the nicer apartments/houses.

I would definitely come check Champlain College out. Before you do, be sure to email either Mike Malony or myself, and we'll give you the insider's tour, if it's something you're interested in.

Good luck,
John Kadlik

Re: Alumni
Hi John!

Great to hear back from you..... and also to know it is the same "old John"! Julie and I often discuss the time we all had in our own SWE lab! Now it is a shared space with no place to gang up that way. Congratulations on your engagement and look forward to seeing you up here. You could always visit us here anytime. What about your music?

Eric and Mike are doing fine for themselves. I got them a new client .... hope it will work out fine for all. Bob teaches for me on the side. He is very active with .NET and Sql usergroups. Dan is doing fine at CT. Vared has moved back to Israel.

A lot of things have changed here and are changing. Julie must have updated you. We missed you and Bob at the lunch in July.

The club is going fine. The entire credit goes to you folks for having worked so hard to set up this club. The same constitution exists even now... no changes are made. You can look it up on the site and of course the most famous late night LAN parties!

Alumni is always invited to take part in the club activities. It is a standing invitation.

.... stay in touch. It is always good to hear back from all of you.

Shubha

VTdotNET - Next Monday's Vermont.NET Meeting - Building Beautiful Applications with WPF!
Hey guys,

There is another VTDotNet meeting this month. Here are the details:

Date: Monday, August 11th

Location: Champlain College, Hauke Building Room 005

Time: 6 – 8:30pm

Speaker: Nick Pettersen from Electric Rain (www.erain.com)

Topic: Designing .NET Apps with Style – A StandOut Case Study

Join Nicholas Petterssen, Director of Product Design for Electric Rain, for a look into how design can differentiate your .NET apps with the new developer/designer workflow Microsoft is touting in .NET 3.0 and beyond. Learn what WPF, Expression Blend and a good interactive designer can do for your projects in the “Sexy App” department and experience how the rich media, animation and 3D capabilities of WPF were utilized by Electric Rain in their next-generation presentation software, StandOut.

Speaker Bio: Nick Petterssen is the Director of Product Design for Electric Rain, a multimedia software company serving business and design professionals. In this role, Nick researches and leads the development of game-changing products and technologies, including Electric Rain’s StandOut Presentation Solution, a new rich media application that changes the way presentations are created and delivered. Nick’s extensive research on presentations, public speaking and visual communication has transformed him into a thought leader in this space, with a particular expertise in applying software and technology to facilitate more effective communication.

Pizza & Soda (No sponsor this month) $5/person.

We went around and talked about the different internships each of us had this summer and the jobs that we are going to be working this year.

-Banner/activities fair
We have a booth at the activities fair and we need a logo design for the banner to represent the major. If anyone has a design they have in mind feel free to send us your ideas. We decided to have the robots set up at the table and to give out candy and cards with the website dreamsparks.com on it for free software for the students.

-Jana Nixon's Resume Session
We are going to have Jana come in and help us fix our resume's. She will give us pointers on how to strengthen our resume's and how to do better with interviews. This is looking like its going to happen on a friday because Jana wont be available to come to our meetings.
